Hands & Paws for a Better Community.
Based on the Ilha de Moçambique, Northern Mozambique, AWI is a hands-on, non-profit association dedicated to improving animal welfare in the region.
START SMALL THINK BIG
Lets wipe out rabies!
Easily transmitted to humans and unvaccinated dogs, rabies is a cruel yet totally preventable disease. Our aim is to eradicate rabies from the region, and we are already making progress through our vaccination programmes. However, to stop this deadly disease all dogs need to be revaccinated annually, which is a huge task.
OUR
SERVICES
RABIES VACCINATIONS
AWI is working to establish solid rabies control practices within local
communities to ultimately achieve a rabies-free environment.
STERILISATION
Prolific breeding in cats and dogs quickly leads to unmanageable, rampant stray populations. AWI provides a humane sterilisation service to help control and create healthier animals.
DE-WORMING
Another easily preventable problem – worms are a blight to both animals and humans. By providing a regular de-worming programme AWI can easily improve the health of the animal population and also reduce transmission to children in particular.
EDUCATION
We are very proud - through our basic education programme – that cruelty to animals such as stoning strays is now a thing of the past. There is still much to be done but we are slowly building up the trust of the community and helping them understand the special relationship that can be forged between the people and domestic animals.
EMERGENCY SERVICES
From bites, ingested toxins to broken limbs – we provide immediate care when required.
CLINIC CARE
Our qualified team is always on hand to provide veterinary care from complex surgery to simple check-ups. Our clinic might look basic, but we are set up to provide medical care where it is needed.
WELLNESS SERVICES
Prevention is always the best form of health care. We offer a simple examination to make sure that animals are healthy and treat any issues before they become serious
ABOUT
OUR CLINIC
Concerned by the number of unvaccinated dogs and cats and saddened by the lack of animal welfare on the Ilha de Moçambique, Vittoria Sogno and her co-founder Sandra Rodrigues set up AWI in 2015 with the invaluable assistance and support of Chris Staubo and Peter Laird.
AWI follows the guidelines laid down by WHO/FAO One Health. which believes that human and animal health are interlinked and interconnected with the ecosystems in which they co-habit.
We regularly work in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture's animal health department, contributing to the Global Rabies Alliance's goal of controlling rabies worldwide.
Our ambition is for communities to create their own sanctuary: with routine vaccinations, a healthy manageable population and general respect and empathy for animals.
